Need an escape from reality?

 

Science Fiction or Sci-Fi is a genre of speculative fiction that typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. I feel if there’s any genre that will help you take your mind of things at this time it is Sci-Fi.

Without further ado here’s the list in no particular order:

 

Starship Troopers (1997)

The story is set in a future society ruled by a human interstellar government dominated by a military elite, referred to as the Terran Federation. The first-person narrative follows Juan "Johnny" Rico through his military service in the Mobile Infantry. Rico progresses from recruit to officer against the backdrop of an interstellar war between humans and an alien species known as "Arachnids" or "Bugs". Interspersed with the primary plot are classroom scenes in which Rico and others discuss philosophical and moral issues, including aspects of suffrage, civic virtue, juvenile delinquency, and war; these discussions have been described as expounding Heinlein's own political views.

 

Jurassic Park (1993)

The film is set on the fictional island of Isla Nublar, located off Central America's Pacific Coast near Costa Rica. There, wealthy businessman John Hammond and a team of genetic scientists have created a wildlife park of de-extinct dinosaurs. When industrial sabotage leads to a catastrophic shutdown of the park's power facilities and security precautions, a small group of visitors and Hammond's grandchildren struggle to survive and escape the perilous island.

 

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (2009)

In the film, an aspiring inventor named Flint Lockwood develops a machine that can convert water into food following a series of failed experiments. After the machine gains sentience and begins to develop food storms, Flint must destroy the machine in order to save the world.

 
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind (2004)

Other Genre(s): Romance

It follows an estranged couple who have erased each other from their memories. Pierre Bismuth created the story with Kaufman and Gondry. The ensemble cast includes Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, and Tom Wilkinson.

 

See You Yesterday (2019)

Other Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Crime.

The film follows the story of an ambitious science prodigy, who uses her prowess and capabilities to create time machines, in order to save her brother who has been killed by a police officer. As she tries to alter the events of the past, she will eventually face the perilous consequences of time travel.

 

Jupiter Ascending (2015)

Other Genre(s): Action, Adventure.

Starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, and Douglas Booth, the film is centered on Jupiter Jones (Kunis), an ordinary cleaning woman, and Caine Wise (Tatum), an interplanetary warrior who informs Jones that her destiny extends beyond Earth.

 

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Other Genre(s): Action, Adventure.

This is a 2018 American computer-animated superhero film featuring the Miles Morales incarnation of the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel. Set in a shared multiverse called the "Spider-Verse," the story follows Miles Morales as he becomes the new Spider-Man and joins other Spider-People from various dimensions to save New York City from Kingpin.

 

The One I Love (2014)

Other Genre(s): Romance/Comedy.

A couple (Mark Duplass, Elisabeth Moss) whose marriage is crumbling have a surreal experience during a weekend getaway at a house recommended by their therapist (Ted Danson).

 

District 9 (2009)


Other Genre(s): Action.

The film is partially presented in a found footage format by featuring fictional interviews, news footage, and video from surveillance cameras. The story, which explores themes of humanity, xenophobia and social segregation, begins in an alternate 1982, when an alien spaceship appears over Johannesburg, South Africa. When a population of sick and malnourished insectoid aliens are discovered on the ship, the South African government confines them to an internment camp called District 9

 

Advantageous (2015)

Other Genre(s): Drama.

In a near-future city where soaring opulence overshadows economic hardship, Gwen and her daughter Jules do all they can to hold on to their joy together, despite the instability surfacing in their world.

 
Snowpiercer (2014)

Other Genre(s): Action, Drama.

The film stars Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Go Ah-sung, John Hurt, and Ed Harris. It takes place aboard the Snowpiercer train as it travels a globe-spanning track, carrying the last remnants of humanity after a failed attempt at climate engineering to stop global warming has created a new Snowball Earth. Evans stars as Curtis Everett, one of the lower-class tail-section passengers, as they rebel against the elite of the front of the train

 

The Girl With All the Gifts (2016)

Other Genre(s): Action, Drama, Horror.

Starring Gemma Arterton, Paddy Considine, Glenn Close, and Sennia Nanua, the film depicts a dystopian future following a breakdown of society after most of humanity is wiped out by a fungal infection. The plot focuses on the struggle of a scientist, a teacher, and two soldiers who embark on a journey of survival with a special young girl named Melanie.
